RISE 165 & 166 -RISE 20th Memorial event- - 2023-02-23
Korakuen Hall, Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan
Twenty years of RISE means two events in one day! Which, for you, means 21 free fights a week later!
The main event of RISE 165, the day show, sees #2 bantamweight “Dangerous Boy” Koki Osaki taking on #12 ranked Ryoga Terayama. Osaki’s entrance song is Sandstorm by Darude and he dislikes shiitake mushrooms. Koki had a 4-1 record in 2022 finishing with a decision victory over Seiki Ueyama under Shoot Boxing rules at the big Christmas cross-over show.
His opponent, “21st Century Boy” Ryoga Terayama, has just turned 19 because was born in 2004 and has been fighting professionally since he was 15. He’s already fought in RISE, DEEP⭐︎KICK, Shooto, and RIZIN in his young career and was able to avenge the single loss on his record, to Shoa Arii. His entrance song, appropriately, is 20th Century Boy by T.Rex and he dislikes insects and studying. He is the current DEEP⭐︎KICK bantamweight champion and he ended up only fighting once in 2022, taking a decision over Kyosuke in October. He hopes to win this time so that he can work on his goal of becoming a RISE champion while still in his teens.
The focus of the night event, RISE 166, is a one-night flyweight (114 lb) tournament for RISE NEW WARRIORS where all of the competitors are teens. The four competitors are:
Momu Tsukamoto: 17 years old, 7-2 with 2 KOs. Momu is the current DEEP☆KICK 112 lb champion, but he was knocked out by Songchainoi in the first round of his last fight in September. He holds a decision win as an amateur over his first round opponent, Ryujin Nasukawa, back in December 2020. Momu dislikes ghosts and says that his hobby is gluttony. His nickname is “蹴天童子” which DeepL says translates to “Guardian Deity of Heaven and Earth.”
Ryujin Nasukawa: The 16-year-old younger brother of Tenshin Nasukawa, who you may have heard of. Ryujin lost his second pro fight on the prelims of THE MATCH, so at 16 he is already sort of a failson compared to his 40-fights-undefeated legendary brother. He’s still in his first year of pro fights (4-1 with 1 KO) and most recently defeated Kojiro on the Christmas Day RISE show. As noted, he’s looking to avenge his amateur loss to Momu, and RISE is looking to have him win this tournament so they can continue to build Tenshin Junior. Ryujin dislikes ghosts and his hobby is games. His nickname is “伝説の系譜” which means “Legendary Geneology.”
Kuryu: 18 years old, 8-3-1 with 3 KOs. Though he won his first fight of 2022 at RISE 154, his last 3 fights of the year were 2 decision losses and a no contest with Toki Tamaru due to a clash of heads. When the rematch with Tamaru fell through, Toki was given a title shot and became RISE champion, while Kuryu is looking to bounce back in this tournament. Kuryu dislikes ghosts and his hobby is fishing. “Kuryu” means “sky dragon” and Kuryu’s nickname is “Onomichi’s Sky Dragon.”
Tenshi Matsumoto: The oldest competitor in the tournament, 19 years old, 5-1 with 2 KOs. A perfect 3-0 in 2022, most recently victorious via KO over Kota Arai in December. Tenshi dislikes getting shots at the doctor. His background is in Kyokushin Karate. He believes that people see him as the least likely to win this tournament, and wishes to prove them wrong.
RISE Basics: Most fights are 3 3-minute rounds with a single 3-minute extra round if it’s a draw. 3 knockdowns in a round is a TKO, or 2 if it’s a tournament fight. Judges are fairly liberal with 10-10 round scoring, so you will often see fights scored 30-30 or 30-29. K-1 Kickboxing rules: knees are legal, elbows are not. Clinch must be broken with an immediate strike or the ref will separate.
Continuing RISE’s weird style of posting, the fights have commentary but no graphics including on-screen clock. Sorry. Fights highlighted in bold were ones that I found particularly entertaining.
